Is Canadian Olympic champion still in a US jail because she blew the whistle?

This CBC article reports that Myriam Bedard's US lawyer claims that his client is languishing in jail because she is a "whistle blower":

Kevin McCants, Bédard's American lawyer, said Bédard and her second husband, Nima Mazhari, believe Canadian authorities have left Bédard to languish in jail as a way to punish her for the role she played in the federal sponsorship scandal.
Is this paranoid, advocacy or is this worth considering?

How does that make sense? Shouldn't the current gov't be grateful?

Anon. 12:59. Some whistle blowers allege that they will be held accountable by "the establishment" (regardless of affiliation) or all "big business" depending upon context because those in power do not want there to be "whistle blowers" or a "lose cannons" in the woodwork.

In theory, the Canadian Government and her departments could be seen to have a vested interest in sending a message to other prospective whistle blowers to keep quiet. At least, some who claim their lives have been ruined over whistle blowing claim the punishment is unrelenting and ongoing.

Alan Cutler, the "real" sponsorship whistle blower ran and lost for CPC last January in Ottawa Centre. This would be the extreme exception and not the rule.
